Get to know LaShonta

LaShonta Edwards is the culmination of a strong Chicago foundation, determination and most importantly, faith. She is an example of what brains, persistence, entrepreneurial spirit mixed with a warrior mentality can accomplish.
After graduating High School in 2001 LaShonta entered the United States Army where she studied Surgical Technology then worked at West Point Military Academy’s Keller Army Community Hospital caring for the needs of the Army’s Officer Cadets. After leaving the Army she continued her education earning a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Kaplan University in 2007.
As she learned about Postpartum Depression (PPD) she realized there are few resources available   women. In many cases, people do not believe the condition is real. The lack of resources led her to organize A Mother’s Sanctuary (AMS), a 501 (C) (3) organization, 2014. AMS is designed to educate the world and expecting mothers that Maternal Mental Health is real and how to recognize the symptoms. AMS also works to fulfill the vacuum in hospitals and clinics specializing in women’s care. In addition to education, she offers preventive care through her services as a Labor and Postpartum Doula.
Her compassion and passion to enable patients and families suffering with mental health issues led her to the legislature in Austin to petition for better health resources in the State of Texas and to recognize May as Maternal Mental Health Month.
Witnessing the disparaging treatment of mental health patients motivated her to fight back providing Mental Health First Aid Certification training with the hopes of ending unnecessary abuse at the hands of public safety and others in the community.

As she‘s conquering hurdles in way of improved  mental health education and treatment she also brought her dream of becoming an author come true, twice.

Educator, Advocate, Doula, Author, …

Mother. Her greatest achievement yet. She is raising five wonderful children in her home in Spring, Texas.

Her passion for the Mommy suffering from Maternal Mental health is best described in the vision and mission of A Mother’s Sanctuary:

The Vision

A Mother’s Sanctuary Vision is to ensure that every soon to be mother, present mother, family and friend can recognize the signs and symptoms of all Maternal Mental Health Illnesses and that everyone understand the importance of treatment while utilizing safe and supportive measures leading them into recovery.

The Mission

A Mother’s Sanctuary is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide a safe environment for women who are suffering from perinatal and postpartum mental health issues. We will promote awareness, prevention, and treatment of mental health issues related to pregnancy not only to the mothers, but the family members and friends as well.
